This program offers employer-sponsored, self-funded health plans pursuant to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), with integrated medical stop-loss coverage. These are not traditional insurance plans. The stop-loss insurance only protects the plan sponsor's financial obligations, not individual employees, and is underwritten by Roundstone (CA Lic. No. 0H65130). Claims and plan administration are handled by Bywater (CA TPA No. 6003851). SafetyWing is not an insurance company, broker, or TPA. Our role is to help employers access a modern, streamlined setup for offering healthcare benefits to their teams. We provide informational materials, support, and plan design tools, but we do not underwrite or administer plans in any U.S. state or territory. Please refer to the official Summary Plan Description (SPD) and stop-loss policy for full terms and details.
This is a self-funded employee health plan designed for US-based teams. It uses Cigna’s PPO network, one of the largest in the country, and comes in three tiers:
Top tier: no deductible, no coinsurance and no provider copays in-network. Prescription copays are the only in-network cost.
Middle tier: no deductible, with fixed copays on most services.
Entry tier: a high-deductible plan with the lowest monthly cost, and it’s HSA-eligible.
No. Every plan has the same coverage: everything the ACA requires, plus things many plans leave out, like acupuncture, chiropractic care, and emergency care on trips abroad. The plans only differ in how costs are shared.
Teams of 5 or more full-time employees. It's a federal (ERISA) plan that meets ACA requirements, so one plan covers your whole US team with no state-by-state setup. Contractors and part-time staff aren't eligible yet.
No, but staying in-network keeps costs lowest and most predictable. Every plan uses Cigna’s PPO network, with 1.6 million doctors, hospitals and clinics nationwide. When your team uses in-network providers:
Providers bill the plan directly, so there are no claims to file
Costs follow your plan: $0 on the top tier (apart from prescription copays), fixed copays on the middle tier, and the deductible then 30% coinsurance on the entry tier
If someone sees an out-of-network provider:
Every plan has a separate out-of-network deductible, then 50% coinsurance
The provider may not bill the plan directly, in which case they’ll need to submit a claim
They may face balance billing if the provider charges more than the plan allows
Emergencies are always covered at in-network rates
If there’s no suitable in-network provider nearby, your Care Navigator can help. In some cases, we can cover out-of-network care at in-network rates. Find in-network providers
Most likely. The Cigna PPO network has more than 1.1 million locations nationwide, and nobody needs a referral to see a specialist. Among our first US members, 87% kept their existing specialists and 93% easily found an in-network doctor.
Yes, unlimited family members can be added! The price is capped at 3 total members at the same rates, meaning that you only pay for up to three people (including the employee), even if you add more family members.
