Frequently Asked Questions

No health checkups are required! We do not exclude pre-existing conditions as long as they are not listed as a general exclusion. So, for example, if you have a pre-existing case of TMJ, it would not be covered only because it is excluded in the overall policy.

Note: For our Affinity Plan and Nomad Health application (plans that the individual pays for themselves), pre-existing conditions are not covered. Members may require a check-up or present additional medical notes. While we strive to be inclusive, we may deny coverage based on the applicant's responses.

Yes, the age limit to sign up is 74 for all of our plans. However, this only applies to new members—if you are 73 when you enroll in the plan, you will be eligible for coverage for as long as you wish.

US citizens can enrol in Remote Health as long as they live outside the US (i.e., they are not currently US residents). You are considered a resident in a country if that is where you plan on spending the most time in the next 12 months. You can search whether you are covered depending on your country of residence here.

Unfortunately, we currently cannot offer coverage to members who reside in the United States or Canada.

This depends on if you're a local German national or an expat. Remote Health can be bought as a top-up to the local plan if you're a local German national. Here are some reasons why members use Remote Health as top-up insurance: • Faster treatment: reduced wait times to get the treatment you need by not joining public waiting lists. • Freedom to choose the hospital you want: using a public health service can often restrict the hospitals you can visit. Remote Health gives you access to any public or private hospital. • Eligible for cash payout: get paid up to $150/night when staying in a free public hospital or when your treatment is covered by different insurance. • Global coverage: use this coverage wherever you live, move, or work, so if you are a nomad or traveling, you don’t need another insurance to cover your medical care. • A referral from your general practitioner is not required before seeking care with a specialist.  If you're an expat, you may buy this as a primary plan only after the local immigration office approves your visa.

Yes, if Remote Health is considered secondary insurance in your country, the primary insurance would cover first, and Remote Health would work as a top-up.

For any dispute, the insurance company will attempt to solve this with the other insurance company without requiring anything from the member.

Once your company adds you to the group plan, you will receive a welcome email from SafetyWing, and the email will contain a link to activate your insurance.

You must activate your coverage within the first 30 days of receiving the welcome email. Delays in creating your member profile could impact your start date of coverage.

If you are paying for Remote Health yourself, through one of our partnerships:

You should be able to sign up and pay us directly. Please speak with your team or contact us via live chat if you need help signing up.

For self-paid plans, medical underwriting is part of the application, but you are free to signup whenever you wish. Medical underwriting means we will ask some questions about your current health, and it may mean pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Eligible dependents include your spouse, domestic partner (only requirement is you reside in the same home), biological children, legally adopted children, step-children, or if a policyholder is a legal guardian of a minor.

All dependents will be enrolled on the same plan as the policyholder. So, for example, If you are on Premium plan, they will be enrolled in Premium too.

Each family member will have their own policy, so that the maximum benefit limit applies to each member, not the entire family.

You will have the chance to add dependents when you first activate your insurance after receiving the welcome email. After that, you have 30 days from your start date to add a spouse, partner, or child (biological, step-child, or minor in your home that you have legal guardianship over), or after a qualifying life event such as marriage or a birth. Otherwise, you will have to wait for your policy renewal to add additional family. If you would like to add family members within the qualifying window, let your employer know.

If you only wish to cover your children and not have your spouse on your Remote Health coverage, you can do this!

Legally married or domestic partnerships can be covered as dependents of the main policyholder, regardless of their gender.

You can use a government-issued, non-expired ID to enroll if you don't have a passport. If you happened to use an expired passport number, our customer service specialists can help you change your ID via the live chat on our website.

The maximum benefits are not shared amongst the family. Each member will have their own benefits! That means that each member on the plan will have a US$1,500,000 (US$2,500,000 on Premium Plus) maximum benefit per policy year.

If you leave your team during the contract, your Remote Health coverage will be canceled at a date specified by your admin.

Get in touch with the SafetyWing customer service team through the live chat widget on our website, and we can send this to you!

When we built our Remote Health plans, we analyzed what our members want and need the most. As a result, we created the best plan we could imagine for the lowest cost.

The only add-ons available are life insurance at the company level (your company admin will decide whether team members can get it) and extra coverage in the US, Hong Kong or Singapore. If you are looking for the most coverage possible, we suggest the Premium Plus plan.

Switching plans mid-policy year (twelve months) is not currently an option. You must add dependents either at the sign-up time or within 30 days of the policy start date.

Yes, the payment is monthly. However, the dependent will need to stay on your plan throughout the duration of the policy year.

First, arrange treatment or doctor's appointments with your preferred doctor or clinic. For most treatments and visits, you will pay your provider directly after the treatment or visit. Before you leave the office, please collect medical notes detailing what the treatment was for and the date you received treatment. You will also need to request an invoice or receipt for the amount paid. Then you will log onto your SafetyWing online dashboard, click “make a claim,” and fill out the form. It will only take you a few minutes.

The form will ask you for details of why you needed the treatment, what the treatment was, your medical notes and receipts, and your banking information for reimbursement.

Reimbursements should take 21 days or less. For any treatment over US$500, please contact us and request pre-approval and direct billing through your dashboard, by clicking button labeled "Get pre-approval or direct billing." This is required to avoid a 30% penalty.

We will ask you to submit a treatment plan, medical notes, and estimated costs. The information will go directly to our medical team to get the claim pre-approved and direct payment arranged with your provider. Whenever possible, please start this process as soon as you know about the treatment. A minimum of 2 weeks is usually required to ensure direct billing.

We offer a complete global health plan that allows our members to spend as much time abroad as they please. Our members can have peace of mind while traveling, knowing that their health needs are covered.

Our plan also offers full coverage in the member's home country and no exclusions for pandemics! Regardless of where our members are, we are here to help in any time zone. We offer a fast and easy claims process, and our team is at their service to assist with coverage and claims questions anytime they need help.

We offer 3 Remote Health plans: Standard, Premium and Premium Plus, in order of increasing benefits and limits.

Your country of residence is where you plan on spending the most time in the next 12 months.

Remote Health will cover short trips (although it is not travel insurance and won't cover lost luggage or travel delays). You don't need to notify us if you're traveling to a country different from your residence. Travel can be for any reason, business or pleasure. If you need proof of insurance for entry or visa requirements, we can provide you with your certificate of coverage, a benefits letter, and a letter explaining your COVID-19 coverage. There are a few countries where we cannot arrange direct billing for hospital stays. Check here if a country you live in or plan to visit is affected. Please note that the United States, Hong Kong, and Singapore have restricted coverage. In those three countries, coverage is limited to 30 days per trip, not to exceed 183 days per year. The coverage is limited to emergency or non-elective coverage only. The maximum benefit for illness is $50,000 and $500 for outpatient (US dollars).

For all other countries, your full coverage will stay the same.

While we can't guarantee that your visa application will be accepted, members have successfully used Remote Health to apply for Schengen visas in the past. Members will require a Certificate of Insurance and Insurability letter which we can provide by request to any member with an active Remote Health contract.

You can visit the United States, Hong Kong, and Singapore, and be covered for accidents and emergency non-elective treatment.  You're covered up to 100% UCR for injuries up to a maximum of USD $50,000 and up to a maximum of USD $500 for outpatient services. This coverage is limited to 30 days per trip, up to 183 days per year.

The main difference is that Remote Health and Nomad Health are comprehensive medical insurance products but without non-medical travel benefits. Therefore, neither are a direct alternative to Nomad Insurance. Remote Health will cover more medical needs than Nomad Insurance, such as elective treatment, pre-existing conditions, cover for cancer treatment, etc. Remote Health includes benefits like maternity care, dental, vision, and screenings and vaccines (limits depend on your plan). It can be used as your primary health insurance and has a maximum coverage limit of up to US$2.5 million. Remote Health does not have a network! This means that you are free to see any licensed provider or hospital, public or private. We can also provide direct billing when your claim is US$500 or more. Remote Health can also provide you with health coverage while you are travelling outside of your home country. Nomad Insurance does provide medical and travel benefits. The medical maximum benefit is US$250,000. You can use this coverage for hospital care, urgent care, and more while you are travelling outside of your home country. It also provides travel benefits, such as trip interruption coverage, travel delays, and lost checked luggage. Nomad Insurance cannot cover cancer treatment or pre-existing disease or illness.

Nomad Health is the individual plan version of Remote Health, ie. a plan that anyone can buy for themselves, rather than getting it through their employer. The main difference is that pre-existing conditions are not covered.

Essential

To be eligible to claim for emergency dental pain relief treatment, you must have had an active insurance period of at least 14 days at the time the pain began. Complete For Nomad Insurance Complete, there is a 10-month waiting period for maternity benefits and a 36-month waiting period for HIV/AIDS treatment.

Remote Health does not have a deductible, meaning your insurance will cover all eligible costs from day 1, except for any applicable co-insurance (member pays 10% for outpatient coverage on Standard plan, and 20% for all maternity coverage).

The policy year is 364 days, beginning on your policy start date. For example, a policy year could be from May 12, 2022 - May 11, 2023. On the 365th day your policy will renew.

Individual plans that you pay for yourself, such as Affinity and Nomad Health, start on the 1st or 15th day of the month.

Remote Health is different from a local or state-run insurance, as it is a global insurance plan. We provide members with worldwide coverage where members can go to any clinic or hospital. In contrast, local plans may be subject to networks and restrictions. You may need to buy separate private insurance for extra benefits, and these plans tend to be inflexible and bureaucratic. With Remote Health, you can go to any clinic or hospital without worrying about eligibility requirements. Your treatment options remain consistent wherever in the world you travel and in 175+ countries of residence. It can be used as a top-up coverage (e.g., dental, vision) in countries with local insurance requirements and tax considerations. We cannot provide advice on tax implications or visa requirements for every country we operate in. Remote Health would be treated as a benefit like any other from a company taxation standpoint.

Notable exceptions: In the following countries, local regulations may restrict members from using Remote Health as their primary health insurance. Fortunately, it can still be used as a top-up plan for extra benefits like dental, vision, and maternity care.

  • Germany

  • Switzerland

  • Netherlands

  • Australia

You can enroll in Remote Health as a top-up plan.

The advantages of also using Remote Health with another insurance include:

  • Faster treatment: reduced wait times to get the treatment you need by not joining public waiting lists.

In countries with public systems (for example, the UK and Norway), SafetyWing has an added advantage: it can be used in addition to a country-specific plan.

SafetyWing's added benefits include visiting any private hospital for the best and quickest service.

If your public healthcare system covers your hospital treatment, you receive a $150 cash bonus per night in a public hospital in your home country (up to 30 nights).

You can get access to treatments typically not provided by standard public healthcare, for example, the latest available cancer treatment regimens.

Use this coverage wherever you live, move, or work, so you don't need other insurance to cover your health if you are a nomad or traveling.

Treatment, medical services, or medical supply is deemed medically necessary by Remote Health in mutual agreement with the member’s provider to diagnose and/or treat an injury or illness. The following is not considered to be medically necessary: provided as a matter of convenience to the insured or the hospital/physician; not appropriate for the diagnosis or treatment of the condition; exceeds the level of care required for the diagnosis or treatment of the condition; outside the scope of the standard practices established for doctors and hospitals; or is a substitution of a standard or private room for a suite if the policy doesn't offer this benefit.

Team members’ medical history is disregarded. There will not be any questions about pre-existing conditions, and the team members will be covered for pre-existing conditions, provided they are not part of the general policy exclusions. There are no waiting periods, except for Maternity coverage on Standard and Premium plans. Note: For our Affinity Plan and Nomad Health application (the plan that the individual pays for themselves), pre-existing conditions are not covered. Members may require a check-up or present additional medical notes. While we strive to be inclusive, we may deny coverage based on the applicant's responses.

No, our dental and vision benefits always come bundled with all our other benefits on the Premium and Premium Plus plans.

With both admitted and non-admitted policies, individuals are potentially subject to tax laws of the resident country on their benefits. The member would deal with this individually, depending on their country.

You can check which countries have restricted coverage here.

This would be dependent on the gap cover provider. On the Remote Health plan, any expensive treatments or visits can be pre-approved and have direct billing arranged.

If the charges are outside of what is considered ‘reasonable’ for the area (UCR), you can choose another provider and we will get pre-approval and direct billing set up with them. Or you can choose to pay the difference in cost, though this is relatively rare.

When you sign up for an individual plan (Affinity or Nomad Health), you can choose a start date of up to 30 days in the future. You will see the latest available start date in the calendar when you complete your application.

We offer 3 Remote Health plans: Standard, Premium and Premium Plus, in order of increasing benefits and limits.

Most surgeries are covered under the core benefits (same for all plans) as you are typically admitted to the hospital. Our plan covers up to the overall limit for inpatient surgery and US$500,000 for outpatient surgery, sometimes called day surgery. This would not come out of your US$5,000 outpatient benefits.

If your surgery or procedure will be more than US$500, please request pre-approval through your dashboard to avoid a 30% penalty. After receiving the information about your surgery, our team will get started right away to pre-approve the treatment. Please give as much notice as possible as well as all medical notes. As soon as we receive all documents required, direct billing can also be arranged, although notice of 2 weeks is ideal.

You are also always free to pay for the treatment or surgery over US$500 yourself then claim for reimbursement after, but without pre-approval, you may get back 30% less on your reimbursement.

By the way, it isn’t necessary to have a referral from your general practitioner to seek treatment with a specialist. Unless you are admitted to the hospital, specialist fees will be covered under the outpatient benefit (max US$5,000 per policy year).

UCR: Usual, customary and reasonable rates for the region

This benefit has a US$5,000 maximum limit per policy year. It covers:

  • doctor's visits for medically necessary treatment (nothing routine)

  • specialist visits

  • physical therapy

  • prescription medications

  • lab tests or diagnostic studies outside of hospital stays

The Standard plan has a 10% co-insurance for outpatient benefits. This means that members are responsible for 10% of the total cost of each claim. There is no co-insurance for our Premium or Premium Plus plans.

We do not cover over-the-counter medications (not requiring a prescription to buy).

It covers yearly physicals, routine check-ups, routine blood work, and vaccinations, up to a maximum of US$350 for the Standard plan and US$500 for Premium and Premium Plus plans per policy year.

Maternity coverage includes medically necessary checkups, pre and post-natal care 30 days after birth, and the birth itself. Coverage limits per policy year depend on what plan you have:

  • US$2,500 for Standard (10-month waiting period)

  • US$4,500 for Premium (10-month waiting period)

  • US$7,500 for Premium Plus (no waiting period)

This benefit does include a 20% co-insurance. That means that for maternity claims, you'll cover 20% of each claim. For example, if your claim is $100, Remote Health will reimburse $80, and you'll pay $20.

We care about your mental health so much that it’s covered twice by Remote Health! One benefit covers 100% of the cost for up to 30 days if you're admitted to the hospital for psychiatric treatment. The second benefit is covered through outpatient services. This allows you to be seen in-person and virtually by a psychologist, therapist, or licensed medical doctor for mental health concerns (outside of being admitted to hospital). You have 10 visits per policy year, covered at 100% of the UCR, for in-person or virtual appointments. Premium Plus members get up to 20 visits.

Starting September 1, 2023, virtual visits will be covered if you have a plan that you pay for yourself.

For Premium and Premium Plus plans, the vision benefit includes:

  • one eye exam every 12 months (including exam, dilation, prescription, refraction for glasses, and retinal imaging)

  • one set of frames every 24 months

  • one set of lenses or contact lenses every 12 months

  • standard lens enhancement (like blue light, UV coating) every 12 months

You can submit vision claims for up to US$500 per policy year, and any extra cost would be a personal expense. Be sure to add your prescription and proof of payment to your claim.

You cannot use outpatient benefits to cover claims related to vision. Eye surgery to correct vision, such as Lasik, is also excluded. However, eye surgery to repair an eligible medical condition is covered with pre-authorization and would be covered under your core inpatient or day surgery benefits.

For Premium and Premium Plus plans, your dental coverage includes:

  • Routine dental care such as cleanings, x-rays, fillings, flouride

  • Procedures such as extractions, crowns, dentures, or inlays

You can submit dental claims for up to US$1,500 per policy year, and any extra cost would be a personal expense. Be sure to add your dentist's notes, invoice and proof of payment to your claim.

We do not cover orthodontics, including braces.

Yes, it would! Reconstructive surgery, emergency dental treatment and rehabilitation to restore natural function to the limbs and face would be covered under our maximum benefit limit (so that, for instance, you can continue to eat, drink, walk and talk properly following a serious accident). See this page of the policy document for more info.

Cancer tests, medication, and treatment (chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy) are covered under the base plan up to 100% of the UCR for either inpatient or outpatient care. It is subject to the policy maximum benefit per policy year, including all your other claims.

UCR: Usual, customary and reasonable rates for the region

Remote Health does provide coverage for medical equipment, but advance notice is required if it will cost over US$500.

To let us know when a medical device is needed, click the "Get pre-approval or direct billing" button in your dashboard.

Generally, pre-existing conditions are covered as long as they are not excluded in the overall policy.

The application for the company plan will ask if any new members have a major medical condition already in treatment, such as cancer or heart issues. If the answer is yes, it could result in altered coverage or a waiting period.

For new members added mid-policy term, the admin won't be asked if the member has pre-existing conditions, but if the admin has information about the major undergoing treatment, they should let us know.

Note: For our Affinity Plan and Nomad Health application (the plan that the individual pays for themselves), pre-existing conditions are not covered. Members may require a check-up or present additional medical notes. While we strive to be inclusive, we may deny coverage based on the applicant's responses.

There are no exclusions for specific sports, but if you're training or practicing a sport for which you receive compensation, it would be excluded.

Remote Health also provides coverage for activities like hiking, motorcycling, driving, etc.

Evacuation is emergency transport (ground, air, water, etc.) to the nearest adequate facility that can treat the member's medical condition. The need for treatment must be life-threatening and critical, and treatment cannot be available at their current location.

Under this benefit, search and rescue is covered if you're at a recognized ski resort or similar winter sports resort. Search and rescue at sea or during off-site winter sports is not covered. Evacuation must be arranged/pre-approved in advance. Repatriation benefit covers a return ticket in economy class on a commercial airline flight for the insured and one (1) companion to the place from which the insured was evacuated, provided that the trip is made within ninety (90) days of discharge and is approved in advance.

Medically necessary tests such as an MRI or CT scan are covered. Please note that we need advance notice of any major procedures or diagnostics that will cost more than US$500. You can provide advance notice by clicking "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard.

You are covered for 10 visits per policy year for up to US$60 per visit for osteopaths, chiropodists, podiatrists, chiropractors, homeopaths, dieticians, and acupuncture, as well as therapies administered by a recognized traditional Chinese or an Ayurvedic medical practitioner.

We do not cover COVID-19 vaccines.

COVID tests are covered if there is documentation of exposure or symptoms. If you do not have symptoms and get a negative result, the test would not be covered.

Yes, there are no relevant exclusions that would apply to working with animals.

There are two cases where you would not be covered for motor-related injuries (car, motorcycle, scooter, etc.): 1. Self-inflicted injury (Exclusion 7.25). For example, reckless driving or driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. 2. Professional sport (Exclusion 7.23). For example, if you are a professional race car driver or being paid for a race.

Remote Health does not have an exclusion for pigments or body ink. Therefore, should a member get a tattoo and has the misfortune of getting an infection, we would cover the treatment of the infection and symptoms under the outpatient benefit.

If you are participating in any sport professionally, claims resulting from injuries or illness are not covered by Remote Health. See exclusion 7.23.

As long as your pre-existing condition is not a general policy exclusion, it will not affect your coverage under Remote Health, as long as you are part of a company plan.

This refers to injuries sustained as a bystander during a war on terrorism. As long as you aren’t engaged in the war on terrorism and are a spectator, injuries sustained are covered 100%.

At this time, no. We’d love to roll out this benefit in the future.

Birth control unfortunately is not covered on these plans, however, we’re looking into offering it in the future.

Yes! Medically necessary treatment with a physical therapist is a covered benefit of the policy, provided it's not a result of anything in the exclusions. We do require pre-approval in advance, and you can submit a notification by clicking "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard.

Routine hearing tests, hearing aids or cochlear implants are excluded from coverage. View exclusion 7.24.

Here is the full list of exclusions, whether they are pre-existing or occur after the plan’s start date.

This is a cost-sharing insurance term. 10% co-insurance means that if you have a $100 invoice for an outpatient service (any appointments or treatment you receive outside of being admitted to hospital), you will be responsible for $10 (10% of the total invoice).

A maximum limit is the maximum amount of money that Remote Health will cover for eligible claims during the policy year (US$5,000 for all outpatient benefits). This amount restarts on the renewal date of your policy.

For example: if your Remote Health policy ends on 30 June 2024, your benefits will renew on 1 July 2024. In other words, when the policy renews, your benefit maximums are reset.

The additional life coverage protects your family financially in case you experience life-altering injury or death while employed or contracted with your company. This includes loss of limb or eyesight from an accident that is covered under your Remote Health plan. Depending on what occurred and what plan you are on, you or your family will receive a lump sum payout for support during difficult times.

Right now, life coverage is only available to members aged 25-55, although we are working on expanding the eligible age range.

In such cases, either you or your beneficiary (the person who will receive the payout) can start a claim by contacting us via live chat or email at support@safetywing.com.

That's up to your company admin or benefits manager. If you're interested, please let them know and they can get in touch with us.

Right now, only primary policyholders can have life coverage additional to their health plan. In other words, you have to be a team member of the company or group that offered you Remote Health to be eligible for the additional life insurance.

No: this means that if you die from a condition you had before you started Remote Health coverage, your beneficiary will not be eligible for the payout. Under the group plan though, you are still covered for health costs related to the condition even if it was pre-existing, as long as it’s not specifically excluded in the policy.

You can add only one beneficiary to receive the payout in case of your death. If you would like to change your beneficiary, you can contact us via live chat.

To claim, you, your beneficiary or another family member can contact our customer care team through live chat or email and we will guide you through the process.

You can pay upfront and file your claim through your SafetyWing member dashboard. You will need the following documents:

  • a receipt for proof of payment

  • an itemized invoice showing how much you were charged for what

  • any medical notes that explain what the treatment was for, including diagnosis, treatment plan and/or prescriptions

To avoid a 30% penalty, you must get pre-approval for treatments or procedures US$500 by clicking "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard-- we can also arrange to pay your provider directly during this process. However, if you are struggling with payment for any amount, please reach out to the Remote Health team at rh-preapproval@safetywing.com. For emergency hospitalization or surgery, you can call our 24/7 emergency service at +1 855 276 8864, which will work with the hospital to handle billing directly.

Important: If you pay and claim for an emergency that ended up costing more than US$500, please let us know by clicking "I have an emergency" in your dashboard, otherwise you may get back 30% less than what you paid even if everything was fully covered.

You can use your insurance at any doctor, hospital, or clinic as long as they are legally licensed in the region. In other words, there is no provider network associated with Remote Health.

You must get all treatments or procedures over US$500 pre-approved to avoid a 30% penalty on your reimbursement. This is also required for mental health appointments and physical therapy for any amount.

During this process, you can also request for us to pay the provider directly so you don't have to pay upfront.

You can let us know about any of these things, including emergencies, by clicking "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard.

UCR stands for “Usual, Customary, and Reasonable Cost.” Based on published industry standards, the UCR is determined based on the expected cost of a procedure in that country. For example, if the UCR is $100 for an arm splint and the hospital charges $120, the insurance company will pay up to $100 for that procedure. For major procedures, we strongly recommend setting up direct billing with the hospital or doctor so that the member can learn if the cost of that hospital is above the UCR for that procedure. We have a 24/7 email and phone line for emergencies. Direct billing can be set up within two weeks for non-emergencies and immediately for emergencies.

When you see your provider for treatment, you must pay upfront and file your claim for reimbursement through your dashboard.

If you would like us to pay the provider directly, we will need at least 2 weeks' notice. Please request it by clicking the "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard.

At minimum, we need proof of payment, an itemized list of services you received, and medical notes to process your claim. The information we need will depend on your specific claim. We accept documents and receipts in any language and currency. We may ask for any combination of the following (* means required):

  • Invoice*: A list or description of each service or procedure you were charged for

  • Receipt*: Proof you paid for the service, such as a transaction receipt for cash or from a card machine

  • Medical report*: Document(s) outlining your medical history, symptoms, exams, tests, diagnoses, or treatments as applicable

  • Prescription: A written order by a medical doctor for a specific medication

  • Lab results with diagnosis: Findings of medical tests, with a medical doctor's interpretation of what they mean for your health

  • Test results: Findings of medical tests, including blood work, imaging, other diagnostics

  • Diagnosis letter: A formal, signed letter from a doctor stating your diagnosis

  • Treatment plan: An outline of recommended medical procedures

We recognize that depending on the provider, your documents might not match up exactly with the list above. The information in the documents is more important rather than the type of document itself. If you're ever in doubt, submit all the documents you have.

Log into your SafetyWing dashboard and click "Make a claim.” There is a short form you will fill out and upload your documents, receipts, and medical notes stating the treatment you had and why. Typically claims are reimbursed in 21 days or less.

If we need more information to process your claim, we will reach out through email.

Remote Health will cover up to the maximum limit of the benefit, and the member pays for any coverage costs above this limit. For example, if you claim US$600 for vision services, you would receive a reimbursement for US$500 if the claim is approved.

When you make a claim, you can specify the currency of the bank account you would like to be reimbursed in.

Reimbursements sent in a different currency than the one you paid in will be made based on the exchange rate between the two currencies on the date of your treatment.

A receipt of some sort is required for reimbursement. It can be handwritten, as long as they provide the receipt on doctor, clinic, or hospital letterhead, and there is a signature.

You can pay for your treatment upfront and file your claim in your member profile. You will be responsible for the difference if your claim exceeds the usual and customary amount (UCR).

You can submit multiple claims at once with no issue.

There is no need to translate documents from any language. The same is also true for claims. You can submit your claim in your local currency or in whatever currency you paid in, and if a conversion is necessary for reimbursement, we will use the exchange rate between the currencies on the date of your treatment.

Any procedure or treatment over US$500 must be pre-approved in advance to avoid a 30% deduction from your reimbursement, even if it is fully covered. Please provide two weeks' notice if you want Remote Health to pay your provider directly. You’ll need to submit a treatment plan, estimated costs, and medical notes from your provider. Click on "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard to start the process.

For routine or pre-planned treatment, please provide at least two weeks advance notice when requesting direct billing through your dashboard. If you’re experiencing an emergency, direct billing is available immediately by calling +1-855-276-8864.

If you are transported to the hospital by ambulance, we will need to be notified of the event for the ambulance ride to be covered. Please call 24/7 support at +1 855 276 8864 once you are out of immediate danger within 72 hours of the emergency, so we can coordinate your coverage.

Important: If you paid upfront for emergency services over US$500, please let us know by clicking "I have an emergency" in your dashboard within 72 hours of the emergency. Otherwise, you may receive 30% less on your reimbursement even if everything was covered.

We recommend printing your insurance card and keeping it on you. Your card will also be loaded into your online member dashboard. Otherwise, you can pay for treatment, collect the medical notes and invoice and submit a claim on your online member dashboard. If you need to go to the hospital for a pre-planned treatment, you can notify us in advance by clicking "Get pre-approval or direct billing" in your dashboard. This is required for anything that costs over US$500, including emergencies, to avoid a 30% penalty on your reimbursement.

Currently, we can provide support in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.

An inpatient hospitalization means that you have been admitted to the hospital for a period of 24 hours or longer to receive medical or surgical care. Medical care limited to the emergency room or urgent care is not considered a hospitalization.

SafetyWing’s vision is to create a global social safety net so that opportunity and freedom aren’t determined by where you live or work. We want a future where everyone can access a safety net regardless of where they were born.

It’s important to us that the information we provide about our coverage and benefits is clear and transparent. You can find these details in our policy terms, Certificates of Coverage, and this FAQ. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out via our 24/7 live chat in the bottom right hand corner of this page.

SafetyWing is licensed as an international insurer but also works with other regulated insurance carriers and licensed partners to make coverage available internationally. Our structure allows us to provide coverage to globally mobile individuals and distributed companies while operating within applicable regulatory frameworks.

Simply speaking, it means that SafetyWing is a recognized international insurer and can provide coverage for you in 180+ countries.

The insurance coverage is provided by regulated and licensed underwriting entities. The underwriting entity for each product is clearly disclosed in the policy terms and in the Certificate of Coverage issued to our members.

For example:

  • SafetyWing Insurance I.I. is a Puerto Rico-domiciled international insurer (Classes 3 & 5)

  • Certain health benefits are underwritten by VUMI®, a Puerto Rico-domiciled international insurer, administered by VIP Administration Services LLC, and offered in partnership with SafetyWing

You can see more details on Puerto Rico’s Department of State website.

All that said, SafetyWing handles all aspects of product design and customer service and support ourselves.

Puerto Rico provides a regulatory framework for international insurers so that, with our partner carriers, SafetyWing Insurance I.I. is able to offer insurance designed for people who live, work, and travel across borders.

A licensed insurance company is financially responsible for the policy it underwrites and the claims covered under it. The underwriting insurer is the entity that ultimately bears the insurance risk.

Claims are reviewed based on the policy terms. What’s covered depends on the plan you choose and whether you meet the policy requirements, which are laid out in your policy document.

When you file a claim, we ask for supporting documents like receipts or medical records. We try to keep this straightforward, but what we need depends on the situation. We must do this to make sure everyone is being covered fairly, under the same terms.

The most common reasons claims get denied: the condition existed before your coverage started (pre-existing conditions aren't covered on our travel medical plan), or we didn't receive the requested documentation to verify the details of your claim.

When a member disagrees with a claim decision, we’ll review the case under your policy terms and conditions. Members can appeal a claim decision up to 2 times. Each appeal is handled differently and reviewed by different teams, to ensure objectivity.

If, after 2 appeals, we are unable to reach a resolution, members can choose to involve an independent third-party provider to help resolve the matter. This does not cost anything for the member. You can learn more about the provider here.

Always check your policy document for the applicable dispute resolution options and procedures.

We want to make products that are so good that people will tell their friends about it, and we believe that is better than widespread, non-targeted advertising. So we work with ambassadors, partners and communities to share information about our products designed for people living internationally.

Partners help introduce our services to relevant audiences, but coverage terms, eligibility and claims decisions are always determined based on a member’s specific policy terms, regardless of whether the member was referred by an ambassador or found us on their own.
